The Effects of Experience on Brain Structure

The long term goal of this research is to better understand the effects of experience on brain structure in both rodents and primates. This work involves examining the effects of negative experiences, such as aversive stress, social isolation and deprivation, as well as positive experiences, such as rewarding stress, parenting and environmental enrichment on multiple measures of structural plasticity, including adult neurogenesis, synaptogenesis and dendritic reorganization. The ultimate goal is to understand how the brain is altered by behavior and to identify the mechanisms which underlie experience-dependent change
